February 15th, 2011Boardalicious, Competitions, EventsWe were able to show face at both the Breckenridge and Ogden Winter Dew Tours this year and had a blast. Check out a few of my favorite pics from the extravaganza:

December 26th, 2010Events, News, Safety, SnowboardingRiding backcountry is one of the most rewarding experiences a rider can ever partake in, however, it is also one of the most dangerous. In order to prepare to effectively (and safely) face backcountry terrain, I’d highly recommend starting out by taking a backcountry safety course. In fact, we just got word that Brighton Resort in Utah will be offering a backcountry 101 avalanche awareness course in 2 weeks! Details below. In the meantime, we’ll keep our eye out for more backcountry awareness course options and share them on Westbound Boarder, because safety should always be first priority.
What? Brighton 101 Avalanche Awareness Course
Presented by: Brighton Patrol and the Utah Avalanche Center
Additional Details: This 10-hour course is designed for resort “sidecountry users.” Topics include using UAC forecasts, hazard assessment, safe travel and terrain recognition, “side country” use, snowpack observation and partner rescue.
Dates: Jan. 13 at 5pm, and Jan. 14 at 10am
Cost: $40.00
Must Have: Advanced-Intermediate riding skills, beacon, shovel, probe, and lift ticket

December 19th, 2010Competitions, Events, News, SnowboardingToday was the last day of the first Winter Dew Tour stop here in Breckenridge, Colorado, and with nearly 2 feet of fresh pow blanketing the slopes, it was a nice way to end the four-day-long tour. Norway’s Torstein Horgmo took first on the men’s side with a score of 96.50. His winning run included a frontside noseblunt slide to fakie, a switch frontside double cork 10 and a switch backside 9.
Taking first place in the women’s heat and defending her Dew Tour Championship title was Tahoe’s own Jamie Anderson. This was her fifth first place Dew Tour finish, which she snabbed with a score of 93.00 and a run that included a back 180, switch back 180, fifty-fifty, back 3 and a corked front 3.
The full snowboard slopestyle results are below. Overall, it’s been a great four days, but man am I ready to shred the slopes! So tomorrow, it’s Keystone for me!

December 18th, 2010Competitions, Events, News, SnowboardingI’m out here in Breckenridge, Colorado again for the third day of the first Winter Dew Tour Stop, the Nike 6.0 Open. With prelim rounds behind us, today riders prepped for the men’s and women’s ski and snowboard halfpipe finals. Unlike yesterday’s sunshine, though, today’s weather blanketed the pipe with snow, which threw competitors for a loop and slowed them down considerably.
Louie Vito ended up winning the men’s pipe finals with a score of 90.25, and considering the second place male, Matt Ladley, finished with a 75, I’d say Louie stomped it. His winning set included a front double ten, cab double ten and a crippler (no double corks, Louie?) You can tell just by looking at the scores that the conditions threw several riders off. Olympic bronze medalist Scotty Lago, for example, finished with a best score of only 14.
On the women’s side, Spain’s Queralt Castellet took first place, with Elena Hight following right behind. I’m surprised Kelly Clark, who took sixth in the finals, didn’t end up finishing with a higher score, especially since she took first in the prelims, followed by Elena Hight.
Despite the heavy snow that slowed down the pipe, today’s event was a success, and riders continued to push the boundaries with stylish tricks and good momentum.
Check out the full halfpipe finals results below, and tune in tomorrow for slopestyle.

December 17th, 2010Competitions, Events, News, SnowboardingI’m out here in Breckenridge helping out with the first winter Dew Tour stop of the season – its been one heck of a tour so far! More than 380 riders from 18 different countries are competing in this year’s tour, including Kelly Clark, Elena Hight, JJ Thomas, Scotty Lago, Sage Kostenburg, Mason Aguirre, Jamie Anderson, Chanelle Sladics, and Louie Vito. This year, the tour opted to follow the new industry standard and debut a 22 foot halfpipe instead of the 18 foot pipe it has used in the past, so we should see some pretty sick tricks over the next couple of days.
Today, Kevin Pearce made a quick appearance in the village (apparently it is one of his first public appearances since his big injury), and he should be all set for an interview with Fuel TV tomorrow afternoon.
Yesterday and today, the tour held qualifying rounds, and the men’s superpipe finals are on deck for tomorrow. Keep checking back for the latest updates!
To give you a little sneak peak of the slopestyle course, check out the video from Alli below.

June 15th, 2010Boardalicious, EventsIt was a couple of weeks ago, but nonetheless an amazing event. The 2010 Campus Rail Jam Tour Finals went off Memorial Day Weekend and all contestants were absolutely killin it. If you are not familiar with the Jam here is the gist – it includes the best skiers, snowboarders, ladies and gents from the the 2010 Campus Rail Jam Tour contests. The stops along the way have included, Corvallis, Salt Lake City, Reno, San Diego, the list goes on…Riders compete at a jam session competition and the best of the best are invited to the finals in good ole Portland, OR.
We joined in the fun at Pioneer Square in Portland, OR and witnessed the best shredders of the tour throw down in the pouring rain for over three hours straight. The rain didn’t stop the intensity and the guys and gals really raised the bar against one another with the sickest tricks. The winners of the contest took home some cold hard cash and more steeze then they could carry. Check out our favorite shots from the contest and the results for the mens and womens ski and snowboard finals.

June 5th, 2010Events, Los AngelesOkay, so I’m not actually a mentor, but I recently became a volunteer for a program called Stoked Mentoring and attended my very first volunteer event last night. Stoked is a non-profit organization that teaches at-risk youth life skills through action sports.
Last night, I attended (and snapped beacoup de photos) the Third Annual Stoked Sessions VIP silent auction, Stoked’s annual fundraiser. Hosted by Stoked supporter and professional actor Andrew Keegan (ever seen 10 Things I hate About You?), the evening featured urban art, networking, and, of course, an open bar, always a crowd pleaser. All art pieces were donated, allowing all event proceeds to go directly to the Stoked organization, and many artists even showed up at the event to show their support. Photos from the evening’s festivities below!
Stoked is an organization centered around a mentorship program where they pair a number of mentors with at-risk youth in the Los Angeles and New York areas. In addition to spending time together each week, mentors and mentees learn to skate, surf and snowboard together, giving mentees the opportunity to unleash their passion and connect with their mentors through action sports. Founded by Steve Larosiliere and co-founded by Sal Masekela, Stoked has helped many youth reach their full potential. An inspiring fact – this year, 100 percent of mentees involved in the program graduated from high school, and many plan to go on to college as well. Stoked is changing lives, and not only for the mentees involved, but for many of the mentors and volunteers as well.
Check out Stoked Sessions all day today in “The Brick Building” at the Culver City Art Walk. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer or a mentor or donating to the organization, visit the Stoked website to sign up.

May 25th, 2010EventsIf you missed it last year, sucks to be you, but don’t let that discourage you. Don’t know what the Campus Rail Jam is, where have you been hiding? Anyways…the Campus Rail Jam Tour is a grassroots snow sports movement, dedicated to promoting the amateur ski and snowboard scene. They support the “up-and-comers” and those who are “about to blow up,” and are down with anyone who knows how to throw down on a snowstick (or sticks!).
What we have this weekend is the finals of this seasons Campus Rail Jam Tour. The best of the tour will be vying for some cold hard cash Downtown Portland, Ore. at Pioneer Square this Friday May 28th from 4pm to 8pm. In addition to witnessing some sick shredders (ladies, gentlemen and skiers too), all sorts of sponsors will be giving away the farm, so don’t miss out it is a guaranteed gay ol time. We had a blast at the jam last year, so see you there!

Volunteering to help clean up the California beaches is always a good thing… but its an even better thing when free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert are on the line. This Saturday (May 22), volunteers who participate in a 2 hour beach clean up in Santa Monica, CA through Jack Johnson’s All at Once Community and Heal the Bay will receive free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert on the Santa Monica pier the following Monday (May 24) at 7pm. Heal the Bay is a great organization to get involved in (especially for us surfers who want nice, clean beaches!) and Jack Johnson’s new organization sounds great, too! More information about the event and clean-up here. You can also win tickets by following @jackjohnson and @brushfire on Twitter. So, get cleanin’ and tweetin’!
