February 12th, 2009Competitions, Portland, Snowboard News, Snowboarding
No plans this weekend? Get your competition on at Timberline Lodge this Sunday. For simply the cost of a lift ticket and a $5 entry fee (no entry fee if you are a Fusion Pass Holder!) you can compete in a one of a kind ‘J-Turn’ course. What is the ‘J-Turn’ you ask? One by one competitors charge down the hill with two gates at the bottom. When you reach the bottom, you make a hard carve up hill through the gates, attempting to travel the furthest distance up hill, and hey, you get two runs to work it out!It will be fun, lighthearted and the perfect opportunity to ease yourself into the competition scene. So give the Fusion Series a try, take some pictures and share you experience with us. Oh! An added bonus, the winners take home some sweet prizes, so what are you waiting for?

December 29th, 2008Los Angeles, Portland, Snow Reports, SnowboardingFor the past few weeks, I had been counting down the hours until Christmas, not because I got to see my lovely family who I hadn’t seen in five months, but so I could make a much-anticipated trip to Mt. Hood for some serious shredding! (Just kidding mom and dad, of course I was excited to see you too!
) Reports of massive amounts of snow in both Portland and on the slopes excited me even more. Unfortunately, to my dismay, the fluffy powder snow turned to rain on Saturday and Sunday, ruining our plans for a fun-filled weekend on the slopes. Bummer! Despite not being able to go to the mountain over the weekend though, my brother and I were able to catch a few minutes on our boards Christmas day with the nearly 1.5 feet of snow Portland saw that week. (Pictures below!)I don’t carry all bad news, though. According to Drew Jackson from the Travel Oregon blog, one to two feet of powder is expected to hit Mt. Hood tomorrow. (Two days too late for me! But snow, nonetheless.)
In SoCal mountain news, looks like another sunny week at both Mt. High and Big Bear mountains. And today, Bear Mountain officially opened the first pipe in SoCal! And what a better week to check it out than this? Good news is you definitely won’t see rain this week, but will the fresh snow melt away? Hopefully not! I’ll have my fingers crossed for a good few days over the New Years holiday here in Southern California.

December 15th, 2008Snowboarding
Most people associate Thanksgiving with food, family, and friends… Not me; I usually associate the festive holiday with opening day at Mt. Hood! OK, I must admit, we were all quite spoiled last season, with it being one of the best snow seasons I’ve ever seen… but I was beginning to become a bit worried when already the second week into December Oregon mountains still had yet to see snow. (After all, I’m going home in less than 2 weeks and I expect to hit the slopes at least once!)Then finally, this past weekend, it came. With Bachelor, Meadows and Timberline all kicking off the season on Sunday (and Meadows, reportedly, with 30 inches new snow!) this season may turn out to be a great one after all. Everyone get your snow dances on!
More on California’s season from me later
Until then, I’m still using our abnormally warm winter (which this week – heading into the second week of December – is actually finally starting to feel like fall) to brush up on surfing.Tags: Mt. Hood, Weather Update
