Volunteering to help clean up the California beaches is always a good thing… but its an even better thing when free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert are on the line.  This Saturday (May 22), volunteers who participate in a 2 hour beach clean up in Santa Monica, CA through Jack Johnson’s All at Once Community and Heal the Bay will receive free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert on the Santa Monica pier the following Monday (May 24) at 7pm.  Heal the Bay is a great organization to get involved in (especially for us surfers who want nice, clean beaches!) and Jack Johnson’s new organization sounds great, too!  More information about the event and clean-up here.

You can also win tickets by following @jackjohnson and @brushfire on Twitter.  So, get cleanin’ and tweetin’!

Today, the Santa Monica pier celebrated its 100th Anniversary since opening, and as one of my absolute favorite places on earth, I thought this monumental date deserved a shout out.  According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, town festivities began at 7 a.m., at which time a group of local religious leaders gathered to bless the pier.  Later this evening, the city hosted a re-opening ceremony, complete with musical performances by Dick Dale, Vybration, the Big Bamboo Steel Band and the Los Angeles Brass Ensemble.

Strange… I work five blocks from the pier and had no idea anything was going on until traffic told me otherwise on my way home from a photography class at 9:30 p.m.  So, apprently the festivities didn’t cause too much of a commotion (or maybe it’s just a sign I need to take lunch breaks more often).

Either way, Happy Birthday Santa Monica!  Here’s to 100 more to come.
