Volunteering to help clean up the California beaches is always a good thing… but its an even better thing when free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert are on the line. This Saturday (May 22), volunteers who participate in a 2 hour beach clean up in Santa Monica, CA through Jack Johnson’s All at Once Community and Heal the Bay will receive free tickets to a Jack Johnson concert on the Santa Monica pier the following Monday (May 24) at 7pm. Heal the Bay is a great organization to get involved in (especially for us surfers who want nice, clean beaches!) and Jack Johnson’s new organization sounds great, too! More information about the event and clean-up here. You can also win tickets by following @jackjohnson and @brushfire on Twitter. So, get cleanin’ and tweetin’!

September 9th, 2009Los Angeles, News
Today, the Santa Monica pier celebrated its 100th Anniversary since opening, and as one of my absolute favorite places on earth, I thought this monumental date deserved a shout out. According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, town festivities began at 7 a.m., at which time a group of local religious leaders gathered to bless the pier. Later this evening, the city hosted a re-opening ceremony, complete with musical performances by Dick Dale, Vybration, the Big Bamboo Steel Band and the Los Angeles Brass Ensemble. Strange… I work five blocks from the pier and had no idea anything was going on until traffic told me otherwise on my way home from a photography class at 9:30 p.m. So, apprently the festivities didn’t cause too much of a commotion (or maybe it’s just a sign I need to take lunch breaks more often).
Either way, Happy Birthday Santa Monica! Here’s to 100 more to come.
